Green antifungal waterborne coating based on essential oil microcapsules

There is a great concern about the indoor microbial colonization especially in places that should have high standards of environmental hygiene. Besides, due it shortened useful life coating by discoloration and degradation. Currently this problem must be solved an innovative eco-friendly way. In sense, aim work was to develop green waterborne paint formulated with microcapsules containing essentials oil as biocide agent. This novel hygienic would applied protect surfaces from fungi. The were synthesized interfacial polymerization. Melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin used for microcapsule shell wall, Lavandin Tea Tree essential oils (EOs) core materials. characterized scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy particle size analysis. Preparation acrylic performed MF-EOs dispersed into original just before application on commercial gypsum boards. stability successfully achieved. Two control paints used, one EOs free form other without biocide. effectiveness film against spore suspension Aspergillus fumigatus evaluated seeding fungus painted surface. fungal growth according ASTM D5590 standard specification. score obtained MF-Lavandin indicates trace onto surface (<10 %). On MF-Tea tree 70 %. showed inhibition activity dry compared paint.
